Handball: Federation strips Kwara of hosting rights, decries Government Commitment

The National Under 18/21 Handball Championship earlier scheduled to be held in Ilorin, Kwara State will now hold in Lagos, the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) have announced.

In December, the HFN had selected Ilorin as hosts of the age-grade championships following the successful staging of the last edition in Sokoto last year. At the 2020 edition, where U12 girls was won by home team Sokoto Junior Rima, saw three teams competing, while the U15 category, with Tojemarine Sports Academy claiming the title, saw nine sides in attendance during the one-week long event held from 28 February to 7 March 2020.Despite the newly renovated handball courts in Ilorin and successful inspection of the facilities by the HFN technical team in February, the board has resolved to move the championship to Lagos for administrative reasons.

In a statement, Handball Federation of Nigeria said the Championship will still hold on the scheduled date of March 25 – April 1, 2021 but this time in Lagos as Kwara State is unable to offer necessary government commitment to host the competition.Besides the swift change of hosts, the federation insists the National Division One League and the Prudent Energy Handball Premier League Phase One will go ahead as planned before the Africa Senior Women Handball Nations Cup.

While apologizing for any inconveniences as a result of the change of venue, the HFN has called on teams to sort out their registeration for the event as soon as possible to ensure adequate preparation for them.Earlier, HFN secretary general Alhaji Maigidansanma Mohammed, said interested teams of States, handball clubs and academies who wishes to participate in the Championship are expected to have submitted their entries.
