Imprisonment: Kwara Speaker backtracks, to swear in member 15 months after Appeal Court Judgment

The Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly has resolved to swear in Hon. Raheem Agboola (PDP) member-elect representing Ilorin South State Constituency after 15 months of securing victory at the Court of Appeal, the highest court of hearing for House of Assembly Election matters. The decision is coming days after the Court of Appeal, Ilorin Division had resolved to commit both the speaker and the clerk of the House to prison for contempt of court.

In the letter obtained by Harmony Times and signed by the clerk of the House, Hajia Kperogi which was dated February 5, 2021, Hon. Raheem Agboola is to be sworn in on the 9th of February, 2021 at 10am.

Hon. Raheem Agboola had gone before the Tribunal sitting in Ilorin that he should be affirmed as the winner of the March 9, 2019 elections because the All Progressives Congress did not present a candidate for the poll. His prayer was granted by the Tribunal and also affirmed by the Court of Appeal.

The Kwara State Governor had earlier played to the gallery when his Chief Press Secretary was quoted via a statement that ”What has happened today is one of the beauties of democracy. As respecters of the rule of law and decorum, we submit to the position of their Lordships and congratulate our brother from the opposition party.”- A statement that was never honored up until the Member representing Ojomu/Balogun State Constituency, Hon. Saheed Popoola revealed publicly that Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq directed the leadership of the House not to swear in Hon. Agboola.

It is not clear whether Hon. Azeez Oluwanilo will be mandated to return his illegal earnings and allowance of about 15months considering the disposition of the executives and the leadership of the House over his illegal stay in the House.
