NPFL: Kwara Utd clinch vital away win against Adamawa Utd as 5 clubs battle for top-3 spots

Kwara United’s hitman, Michael Ohanu scored a 20 minute opener to put Kwara United ahead against their bottom-side hosts, Adamawa United, before Chinedu Uwanze consolidated the lead with the decisive goal in the 60th minute to keep the Afonja Warriors in race for continental ticket.

Adamawa United won a penalty in the 32nd minute but Anayor Ogbonna failed to restore parity after missing the spot kick.

United now sit sixth on the log with 62 points — 3 points adrift second-place Nasarawa United.

The game week 37 saw Akwa United winning the 2020/21 Nigeria Professional Football League title with 71 points after thrashing MFM FC 5-2 while Nasarawa United (2nd), Kano Pillars (3rd), Rivers United (4th), Enyimba (5th) and Kwara United (6th) will wait till the final round to vie for the remaining top-3 spots.

The other four clubs are set to face challenging tasks challenging task as they will be on the road on matchday 38 while the Harmony Boys will play host to Katsina United.

Abia United will host Nasarawa United, Kano Pillars will travel to Owerri to face Heartland FC, Sunshine Stars will lock horns with Rivers United while Dakkada will face Enyimba FC.

On the other half of the NPFL table, five clubs are involved in the fight to avoid relegation zone after Ifeanyi Ubah and Adamawa United have been confirmed relegated.

Despite occupying the 14th position, the remaining one match has become a must-win for Abia United, who are 3 points above 18th-position Warri Wolves, not to bear the risk of relegating.

Jigawa Golden Stars, Wikki Tourists and Sunshine Stars — occupying 15th, 16th and 17th position — are also involved in the battle for NPFL survival.
